To record an instrument part in Garageband for iPad follow these easy steps: Step 1. First of all, make sure you are in Instrument view and not in Track view, then choose and tap the instrument you want to record. The Playhead can then be used to mark the starting point of recording. You can rewind to move it to start or tap on the ruler to choose a specific bar/beat. After releasing iMovie for iPad, Apple today has also released GarageBand for both iPad and iPad 2. This app is now available on the iTunes App Store for $4.99. GarageBand turns your iPad into a collection of Touch Instruments and a full-featured recording studio — so you can make music anywhere.

Try again after each step

  1. In the App Store, tap Updates. Find GarageBand in the list. If you see Update next to GarageBand, tap Update. If not, skip this step.
  2. If you use Audio Units Extensions or Inter-App Audio apps as instruments or effects with GarageBand, check with the manufacturer for updates.
  3. If you use an external audio interface, disconnect it. If GarageBand works, you might need to update or service your audio interface.
  4. Delete any Audio Units Extensions or Inter-App Audio apps.
  5. Create a new song, then play it. If it works, check your other songs and solo tracks to see which one caused the issue.
  6. Reset GarageBand. Go to Settings > GarageBand, then tap Reset GarageBand. When you reset GarageBand, your song files, presets, or patches aren't affected. Other custom settings, such as the 24-bit audio resolution and Multitrack Recording settings, are reset to factory defaults.
  7. Back up any songs on your device. Then delete GarageBand and redownload it.

iPad (1st generation), 32GB, iOS 5.1.1, Wi-Fi Only
I recently purchased a 1st Generation iPad with the max iOS 5.1 and I need GarageBand on it. I have GB on my iMac but it doesn't show up in the Apps selection of iTunes so I'm stuck on how to request an older version of GarageBand.

Since the iOS and Mac versions of GarageBand are different, you'll need to purchase it in the Store section of iTunes. You can just search the store for GarageBand if you're having trouble finding it.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply...however, I think I need to reiterate, I need an 'older version' of GarageBand as I only have iOS 5.1.1 on my iPad. I need GarageBand 1.4....which isn't offered on in the Apple/iTunes store. Any idea who might have an old working link to older GBs?

I understand, but if you download the latest version of GarageBand in iTunes, you'll then be offered an older version if you try to download it from the App Store on your iPad. The App Store has a feature to let you download older versions of apps, but one of the prerequisites is that you already own the app, hence the need to download the latest version in iTunes.
